Owner notes and common mistakes

Assuming the dealer checked everything

Many owners assume a dealer checked all open recalls during a service visit. That is not always true. Dealers sometimes check only the recall you asked about. Use this diary to verify each open recall individually, especially if you had work done at an independent shop.

Inherited and privately sold vehicles

If you inherited a vehicle or bought it from a private seller, recall notices may have gone to the previous owner. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, then call a dealer to confirm which repairs were completed. Record each item here so the next owner has a clear history.

Keeping the right paperwork

Save the repair order that shows the recall or campaign number, the date, the dealer name, and the mileage. A simple folder with one page per repair is enough. If you sell the vehicle, include a copy of this status sheet in your records.

When to check again

New recalls can be announced at any time. Check every few months, or when you hear about a recall in the news. If you are preparing to sell, check one week before listing the vehicle so the status sheet is current.
